Domaine de la Vougeraie Pinot Noir
  • Domaine de la Vougeraie Pinot Noir
    Code: DVPn
  • Description: Soft raspberry and cherry fruit on the nose, leading to a hint of classic farmyard/damp undergrowth so typical of good burgundy. On the palate more red fruits, soft and supple tannins and excellent length. Very moreish - I was gutted when the last drop had been drained!
  • Details: This may be 'only' generic Bourgogne Rouge, but in the hands of ace vigneron Pascal Marchand (ex-Comte Armand and maker of the highly regarded Clos Des Epeneaux) this wine assumes village quality. Low yields and biodynamic practices at the domaine produce wines of richness, depth and class of which this is no exception. Unusually, the words 'pinot noir' are used on the front label, anathema in Burgundy! What next, screwcapping? Although Monsieur Marchand has recently been succeeded by Pierre Vincent, Vougeraie are confident that exemplary quality and rigorous standards will be maintained.

On the nose, the wine immediately speaks of its terroir with a mineral and sappy frame. We found notes of ripe cherries, black plums, blackcurrants, blackberries and raspberries. A ripe combination, but we also find plenty of depth and sophistication. The licorice, minty side that we're offered on aeration offers a refreshing kick. On the palate, the fine and elegant frame that we had on the nose is confirmed by a full-bodied and smooth attack with dominant fruity flavours. Then the wine closes back onto its minerality, its refreshing acidity and its supple, crisp grape skin tannins. This gives a nice impression of length. A wine which is drinking well today but which could equally be kept for a few more months.
